Choosing care at home in London: a family's guide

Start with the person, not the service

Before comparing providers, picture the day-to-day. What would genuinely help? It might be companionship and a friendly face, help getting washed and dressed, support to get out into the community, or simply someone to keep the home calm and running. Writing down what 'a good day' looks like will guide every other decision.

Understand your options

• Visiting care — a carer comes for an hour or more, once or several times a day.
• Live-in care** — a carer lives in the home and provides one-to-one support around the clock.
• Companionship and home help** — friendly company, errands and light household help.
• Respite care** — short-term cover so family carers can rest.

Regulated vs introductory care

Some agencies are CQC-registered and manage the care directly. • Is every carer Enhanced-DBS checked and reference-verified?
• Will we usually see the same carer, for continuity?
• What happens if our regular carer is unwell?
• Are you fully insured, and how is our information protected?
• Can we meet and approve the carer before anything begins?

A good provider will welcome every one of these questions — and answer them plainly.
